Occlusal Splints

Create Date | 13 December, 2019 4171 Views

Treatment of occlusal-related disorders is often a challenge for both the dentist and the patient. These disorders are often difficult to diagnose, as the presenting symptoms can be variable. Occlusal splint design and function can be considered an example of the art and science of dentistry. Once the cause of occlusal-related disorders is identified, this reversible, noninvasive therapy provides both diagnostic information and relief without the problems that often accompany other approaches to care, ie, surgery and extended drug therapy.

What is an Occlusal Splint?

An occlusal splint or orthotic device is a specially designed mouth guard for people who grind their teeth, have a history of pain and dysfunction associated with their bite or temporomandibular joints (TMJ), or have completed a full mouth reconstruction. An occlusal splint is custom-made using detailed study models on an instrument called an articulator that simulates the movement of the jaws. The occlusal splint is made from a processed acrylic resin and is designed to guide the jaw as it moves side-to-side and front-to-back.

This precise custom orthotic device not only protects the teeth from harmful habits, but it supports the TMJ and the muscles that are used in chewing.

The more sophisticated mouth guard designed for a person with a specific dental problem is usually called an occlusal splint or orthotic device
A recent innovation in occlusal splints/orthotic devices includes a specific modification designed to reposition the lower jaw allowing improved airflow while the patient is sleeping to aid in the treatment of sleep apnea.

WHAT TYPES OF SPLINTS ARE AVAILABLE?

The types of splints currently employed in occlusal splint therapy include permissive, nonpermissive, hydrostatic, and soft rubber (silicone) splints. The permissive splints allow the teeth to glide unimpeded over the biting or contact surface. These include bite planes (anterior deprogrammer, Lucia jig, anterior jig) and stabilization splints (Tanner, centric relation, flat plane, and superior repositioning).

How do splint work?

Splints provide diagnostic information, allow muscles in spasm to relax, protect the teeth and jaws from the adverse effects of bruxism, and normalize periodontal ligament proprioception. These devices can also allow repositioning of the condyles and jaws into centric relation

X-Rays

How often should you get dental x-rays?

The frequency of getting X-rays of your teeth often depends on your medical and dental history and current condition. Some people may need X-rays as often as every six months; others with no recent dental or gum disease and who visit their dentist regularly may get X-rays only every couple of years.

If you are a new patient, the dentist may recommend X-rays to determine the present status of your oral health and have a baseline to help identify changes that may occur later. A new set of X-rays may be needed to help your dentist detect any new cavities, determine the status of your gum health or evaluate the growth and development of your teeth. If a previous dentist has any radiographs of you, your new dentist may ask you for copies of them. Ask both dentists to help you with forwarding your X-rays.

Are you pregnant? Make sure to tell your dentist. During your pregnancy, you may need to have X-rays taken as part of your treatment plan for a dental disease. Use of the leaded apron and thyroid collar will protect you and your fetus from radiation exposure. Dental X-rays do not need to be delayed if you are trying to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Dental X-ray exams are safe; however, they do require very low levels of radiation exposure, which makes the risk of potentially harmful effects very small. Dental X-ray tools and techniques are designed to limit the body’s exposure to radiation and every precaution is taken to ensure that radiation exposure is As Low As Reasonable Achievable (the ALARA principle). A leaded apron minimizes exposure to the abdomen and may be used when it will not interfere with acquisition of the dental radiograph. Also, a leaded thyroid collar can protect the thyroid from radiation, and should also be used whenever possible. The use of a leaded thyroid collar is recommended for women of childbearing age, pregnant women and children.

Loy Krathong Festival

Create Date | 8 November, 2019 1996 Views

The Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated in Thailand, Laos and some other places in Southeast Asia that have a Thai or Thai heritage

Where can you float a krathong in Bangkok?

The main Loy Krathong celebration in Bangkok has been held at Asiatique Iconsiam and previously, it was held along the banks of Wat Saket in the Old City, which is still a popular place to celebrate. For anyone around Khao San Road, head to the nearby Phra Athit Pier.

What is Loy Krathong?

The history behind the festival is complex, and Thais celebrate it for many reasons. As the main rice harvest season ends, it’s time to thank the Water Goddess for a year’s worth of her abundant supply, as well as an apology for polluting the waters.

Some believe that this is the time to symbolically ‘float away’ all the anger and grudges you have been holding onto, and including a fingernail or a lock of hair is seen as a way of letting go of the dark side of yourself, to start anew free of negative feelings. If your candle stays alight until your Krathong disappears out of sight, it means a year of good luck.

If you happen to visit Thailand this November, there’s a fantastic festival you definitely can’t miss -Loy Krathong. Known as Thai Festival of Lights, Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most enchanting and the second best-known festival after its New Year’s festival Songkran.

The Festival is held annually all over the country, as well as parts of Laos and  Myanmar (Shan State) where it is called Tazaungdaing. Read on and find inspirations for how you can experience Loy Krathong as fully as possible.

5 Ways to know you have bad breath

Create Date | 28 October, 2019 42517 Views
  1. Testing with cotton

Another way to test is to with a piece of cotton gauze. Use some to wipe the back of the tongue and sniff it.  If it smells, then your breath smells. You may also see a yellow colored stain which is an indicator of higher than normal production of sulfide.

2. Testing with dental floss

You can find out if your breath is fresh using dental floss. Use some in between the teeth at the back which is where food particles are most likely to get caught. Smell the floss and you will get an idea of the odor others get when you speak.

3.Wrist test

You can also be able to tell whether your breath is stale by licking the inside of the wrist, leaving this to dry for a minute and sniffing. The inner wrist is not constantly handling things so it can give you a true reading of your breath. You can also do this on the back of your hand. It works because if you have halitosis, sulphur salts will be transferred from your tongue to your skin.

4.Bad taste

Another pointer to bad breath is a bad taste in your mouth. Your may not be able to smell your breath by cupping your hand to your noise and smelling it but you can certainly taste it.  You may notice an odor after a heavily spiced meal or after  taking an alcoholic or sugary drink.  Brushing and a swirl of mouthwash usually takes care of incidental causes of halitosis.

5.Ask

Some people try to get a whiff of their breath by cupping the hand to the nose and sniffing. This only gives you the smell of your hand.  The human body tends to adopt so that you can smell other beings and things apart from yourself so you cannot an odor just by breathing into your hand.

How to do Dental Implant?

Create Date | 16 July, 2019 2091 Views

Day of Surgery

The surgical phase is done in the dental office with local anaesthesia by an oral surgeon.

The First Phase

For the surgical placement of the implant, your mouth will be thoroughly numbed with local anesthesia.

An incision is made in your gums where the implant will go to expose the bone underneath.

A specialized (but quiet) drill will then be used to create a space for the implant in the bone.

The implant itself is then screwed in place with either a hand tool or the same implant drill used to create the initial space.

After the implant is snugly in place, a second component will be screwed into the implant itself and will remain in place during the healing process.

The gums are closed over the implant and a stitch or two may be placed.

Over the course of the next few months, the implant becomes securely attached to the bone.

The Second Phase

The second phase starts with the re-exposure of the implant. Another small incision is made in your gums to expose the implant unless there was a separate component placed on the implant that sits above the gums.

A small extension is placed on the implant for an impression taken. This component is what the lab will use to fit your new crown.

Your dentist will then start a series of appointments to make your new implant crown. Though some of the steps might be different in your case, they usually include making impressions of your teeth. From these impressions, they will make precise working models of your mouth, which are carefully mounted for proper alignment. Your crown is fabricated on these models.

The last step is the final placement of your new crown. In some cases, depending on which tooth is being restored, the dentist may want to try in the new crown before it is completely finished to check the shape and fit of it in your mouth.

Post-Surgery Discomfort

It is normal to have some small bruises and swelling in the gum and soft tissues. Usually, the discomfort, if any, is treated with an ordinary painkiller, such as ibuprofen, hydrocodone, or codeine.

What is Zoom Teeth Whitening?

Create Date | 16 July, 2019 2535 Views

What is Zoom Teeth Whitening?

Zoom Teeth Whitening is a bleaching system designed to lighten the discoloration of enamel and dentin. The treatment is performed in-office, and combines the application of a hydrogen-peroxide based gel with the “Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp,” a UV device which accelerates the bleaching process of the peroxide.

How does Zoom Teeth Whitening work?

The idea is that as the hydrogen peroxide gel is broken down by the rays of the Zoom lamp, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin of the tooth to bleach any stains while leaving the structure of the tooth intact. The entire process takes less than an hour when performed by a qualified professional.

Can I smoke after Zoom Whitening?

Yes, you can smoke 48 hours after teeth whitening, but it will stain your teeth. This procedure doesn’t prevent your teeth from staining. It whitens your teeth. It’s up to you to make good choices about avoiding activities, foods, and drinks that are likely to stain your teeth.

Can I do Zoom Whitening on cavities and crowns?

No. Zoom treatment cannot whiten any foreign material. It is designed to whiten only tooth enamel. It is better to whiten your teeth before having a cavity filled so you can match that dental work to the new shade of your teeth. The same goes for a crown. You want to get a crown that blends with the color of your newly whitened teeth. If you are due to have a cavity filled, a crown put on or any other dental work performed, talk to your dentist about your interest in the Zoom whitening procedure.
